Mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure designed to correct ptosis (sagging) by raising and reshaping the breasts. This procedure involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to elevate the nipple and areola to a more youthful position on the breast mound. It does not primarily alter breast size, though it can be combined with augmentation or reduction procedures to achieve the patient’s desired contour and proportion.
The typical candidate for a mastopexy is an individual with breast tissue descent often caused by factors such as gravity, significant weight loss, aging, or pregnancy and breastfeeding. The technique chosen by the surgeon—which dictates the incision patterns—depends on the degree of correction needed. Incision patterns can range from around the areola (periareolar) for minor lift to an inverted 'T' or 'anchor' pattern for more substantial reshaping.
